Winter skin care. Everything you should know

Do you know how to take care of skin during winter?

Sometimes you ask me if my beauty ritual changes with season – in winter, in particular. Honestly, I’m a little bit shocked that you ask about such stuff because, to me, it’s something natural and obvious. I guess, you should reformulate the question and ask what I use in the winter, what skincare products I replace with more appropriate ones, and how this winter beauty ritual differs from its summer version, so to say.

Undoubtedly, winter is a tough season for our skin, therefore we should know how to take care of it during these freezing months.

Firstly: A good face cream

The excellent face cream to be used in winter should be thick and rich in protecting substances. This allows you to create a kind of a warm blanket for your face – such creams embrace, protect and make you feel comfortable in your skin.

I’m not a fan of thick cosmetic butters therefore I always try to find a cream that combines both aspects: on one hand, it protects skin well and lubricates it, and on the other, it isn’t too overburdening so it penetrates skin fast.

My favorite face creams for winter are:

  • Resibo, SOS Rescue Cream in tube (50 ml)
  • Lush Botanicals, face and body butter, CRÈME DE LA CRÈME (50 ml)
  • StriVectin Multi-Action Restorative Cream (50 ml)

Of course, it’s a good thing to do to check the consistency of a particular face cream (check whether it’s light enough), however, what matters most in winter face care is the composition of a skincare product. What are the ingredients that a good face cream for winter should be made from?

In my view, the key substances in winter face cream are natural oils because they are the source of reinforcing substances that fortify natural coat of lipids. Depending on the skin type we have, we can reach for butters or oils that offer various levels of fatty acid saturation.

Another issue worth pointing out is the presence of ceramides. In short, they make epidermis more dense and prevent water loss. When it comes to replenishing skin with water, you should also look for hyaluronic acid – this is one of the best and well-tolerated by skin substances that a winter face cream may contain.

Additionally, you should also make sure that a face cream you want to apply during winter has UV filters. The sun may have negative impact on our skin even when you think it’s behind the clouds.

Rescue for skin: Face serum

Apart from what I’ve just said, the essential skincare product that should be used during winter is a face serum.

I love face serums because they are light but full of nutrients which concentration is surprisingly high. Such product is a potent moisturizer and an effective nourishing agent – and it supplies skin with these two essential substances in a flash. The truth is that a face serum works better when applied before applying a regular face cream. What I want to say, don’t use face serum as an alternative to a face cream. It’d be better if you considered face serum as a product that helps you take your regular skincare routine to a whole new level.

My favorite face serums for winter:

  • Auriga, Flavo-C Forte serum with vitamin C (30 ml)
  • Origins, Original Skin™ Renewal Serum with Willowherb (30 ml)

Actually, such product should contain similar ingredients like a face cream but, of course, the concentration of the ingredients should be doubled. Therefore, if the face serum you choose contains natural oils, hyaluronic acid and ceramides, then you can be sure that it will help you boost your skin’s appearance on winder days.

However, we shouldn’t forget that the best type of face serum is the one containing vitamins. When it comes to winter skincare, I wouldn’t suggest you to use serums with retinol (it may leave your skin irritated and make it more sensitive to the external factors), but a face serum with vitamin C should pass the exam. It will protect, nourish and rejuvenate your skin.

Cleansing face in winter: Scrub

Of course, you must remember to keep your face skin clean even during winter. This will help you fight off these nasty blackheads and acne. How to cleanse your skin in winter?

The best way to clean your skin is offered by face scrub. However, before treating your face with abrasive particles, remove makeup with a micellar lotion or oil (i.e. due to oil cleansing method that I wholeheartedly recommend to you all – it’s delicate for skin and really effective).

What face scrub is the best one to apply during winter? Well, they aren’t all the same!

I personally recommend you enzyme peels that are made from acids such as lactic acid. There is no need to rub your face with the abrasive particles to remove the dead epidermal cells, which is good because such practices may cause significant damage to skin. And when skin is irritated, it suffers even more due to cold weather.

Here, I’ll recommend you using my beloved face peel:

  • The Ordinary, AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution
