What will you do if you notice the first white hair on your head? Will you either start despairing or try to cover up grayness with a dye? We advise you to go for neither solution. You can come to terms with gray hair pretty easily. Just start taking care of it in the right way. Find out how to do it.
Why does hair turn white?
Hair graying is an entirely normal process. There are many factors influencing its pace and they include: genetic predispositions, stress, vitamin B shortage, some minerals shortage, thyroid gland/kidney/circulatory system disorders and cigarette smoking. Hair loses its color due to decreased melanin production, which is a pigment responsible for gifting our strands with the color. A hair deprived of melanin turns white.
But how does it happen that some of us have snow-white hair, others have silver and others again seem to have some golden reflexes? This difference arises from keratin color, hair thickness, its structure and whether the hair has preserved some pigment. It’s worth realizing that hair graying is irreversible and so far the scientists haven’t discovered any method of restoring the lost color to hair.
What gray hair is like?
Firstly, gray hair is hard to tame. While turning white, it also starts becoming more stiff, dry and resistant to styling. Additionally, with age the oily glands gradually start secreting less oil which is why the hair is often dehydrated, matte and its ends split.
In order to stay away from problems related with gray hair, you must expose the strands to the right type of care. Obviously, start with treating white hair with the dedicated hair care products. These are gentle shampoos with a short list of ingredients. Such products should focus on conditioning brittle and dry hair with split ends. What might be surprising, it’s a good idea to treat white hair with delicate kid’s shampoos that don’t cause any irritations and are really gentle.
Gray hair care
Gray hair care includes: cleansing, regeneration and protection. Thanks to such products, the white strands will be resilient and more manageable, moisturized and nourished, protected against both external aggressors and various types of damage. What’s also crucial, white hair must be shielded against UV rays. Such hair doesn’t provide any protection to scalp against the sun which may lead to discolorations and sunburns.
Natural or color-treated hair?
It wasn’t that long time ago when women dyed their hair only for one purpose – to cover up white hair. Nowadays, we perceive this color differently. Owing to celebrities this white hair was and still is trendy, which in turn resulted in both young and adult women bleaching their white. There was a short period of time where ladies wore their hair gray with blue or lavender tints. However, those who decided to left their natural white color of hair may make use of dedicated hair care products. Such cosmetics contain pigments and special substances that are supposed to bring out the natural color of gray hair.
