Drop, peanut, chestnut… What exact amount of hair products should you use?

Let’s talk beauty products. Differently, though. I’ve got a guide about the exact amount of products to use on hair. Do you know the best proportions for various products? I’m afraid you don’t. Let me offer help!

ARE YOU AWARE THAT…

… hair care products used in excess cause damage to hair! Plus, you use them up way too fast…

The amount of the product you apply turns out to have effect on its effectiveness and efficiency. The best example? Too much foundation, lipstick or loose powder makes us look awful instead of enhancing good looks. And it’s the same when talking hair – too much oil makes hair greasy whereas too much mousse weighs down strands instead of boosting volume. Moderation is welcome, always.

That is why I’d like to aid you in using the right amount of hair products. Of course I’m discussing only cases in which the amount really matters.

WHAT EXACT AMOUNT SHOULD WE USE?

There isn’t one rule that gives you an exact amount you can use. Such rule wouldn’t make any sense. Every product is different.

Here’s a cheat sheet so you know proper amount to use in a single application. Read and learn!

  1. Shampoo is a basic product that we tend to use in excess. What happens next? We don’t rinse thoroughly and end up with dandruff. Few of you are aware that a hazelnut size is enough for a single hair wash. If hair’s very long (e.g. mid-back), you can make it double.
  2. Conditioner – you can use a bit more product provided that it’s a rinse-out conditioner. A chestnut size (or slightly bigger for long hair) is enough for a single application.
  3. Mask is an intensive nourishing product and you can apply more but more means a hazelnut size! I’m sure you tend to apply too much of this deeply-conditioning product…
  4. Oil is a very popular replacement for numerous hair care products, heat protectants and styling primers. It must be applied in small amounts to avoid greasy, weighed down strands. Just 2 or 3 drops are enough for medium-length hair – rub them between the palms and smooth over hair lengths.
  5. Hair end serum – instead of a readymade product, you can use a hair oil or other lightweight, highly-concentrated product. 1 or 2 drops are enough to protect tips from splitting.
  6. Mousse – we tend to believe that by applying lots of styling product we can make a hairstyle longer-lasting and protected from unfavorable factors e.g weather conditions. It isn’t true, though. As far as hair foams are concerned, a hazelnut size (short or shoulder-length hair) or tennis-ball size (long hair) is all it takes to keep hair lovely and protect it.
  7. Hair cream/spray, e.g. anti-frizz products. If they are in a convenient spray form, there’s no problem, you won’t overuse it. If you have a cream, the amount you use shouldn’t be bigger than a size of hazelnut.
  8. Wax/gel – you can easily overuse these styling products so use very little at first and then add more if necessary. The amount to start with is a pea size. Rub it between the palms and apply to hair.
